EnGendeRights’ Policy Briefs and Fact Sheets

EnGendeRights’ Policy Briefs and Fact Sheets

EnGendeRights has just published policy briefs and several fact sheets with the support of Pinsan (Philippine Safe Abortion Advocacy Network).

The first policy brief, “Access to Safe and Legal Abortion and Post-Abortion Care Can Save Filipino Women’s Lives”, discusses the impact of a lack of access to safe and legal abortion and quality post-abortion care, how the liberalization of abortion laws saves lives, how the Philippine constitution allows it, and why we need to provide access urgently. It calls on public officials to uphold women’s human rights and respond to the serious and urgent public health issues.

Here are some fact sheets that summarize the points made in the policy brief:
1. Public Health Concerns and Social Costs of Lack of Access to Safe and Legal Abortion and Post-Abortion Care
2. Asian, Predominantly Catholic Countries, and Former Spanish Colonies Allowing Safe and Legal Abortion; The Philippine Constitution Allows Access to Safe and Legal Abortion
3. Philippine Constitutional Guarantees, Comparative Law, and International and Regional Human Rights Standards Support the Right to Safe and Legal Abortion

The second policy brief, “Access to the Life-Saving Drug Misoprostol to Prevent and Treat Postpartum Hemorrhage Can Save Filipino Women’s Lives”, discusses that postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is the leading cause of maternal mortality and that Misoprostol is a life-saving drug that prevents and treats PPH. The policy brief provides medical, scientific, and international support for the use of Misoprostol for the prevention and treatment of PPH and shows the treatment is consistent with the Philippine Constitution and the Magna Carta of Women. It calls that Misoprostol must be made available to women to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity due to PPH.
