28 Aug EXTENDED DEADLINE (Sept. 28) Invitation to Contribute to Telling Truer Stories: An Anthology for Safe and Legal Abortion
Note: We’ve extended the deadline of contributions and entries to Sept. 28, 2018!
We’re inviting artists and storytellers to join the first art anthology and contest calling for safe and legal abortion in the Philippines. Titled, “Telling Truer Stories,” the anthology will collect visual art, video, and creative nonfiction for the purpose of destigmatizing, demystifying, and decriminalizing abortion in our country.
There are two ways artists can contribute their artwork:
- contributing their art as a donation and
- entering the art contest
Donated artwork will be curated by advocates and artists who participated in a forum on safe and legal abortion last month and have agreed to act as curators and judges for the anthology. Through talks and conversations, they have come to understand the lived realities in our legally restrictive context. The selected artwork will be included in an anthology that will be published and displayed at UP Diliman Film Center’s Videotheque and Bernal Gallery on October 3, 2018.
Artwork submitted for inclusion into the anthology can optionally be entered into the art contest judged by the same curators. Both professionals and amateurs are encouraged to join the contest (guidelines below). But regardless of whether you’re donating your art or entering the contest, we appreciate your contribution to creating artwork that tells truer stories about the need for safe and legal abortion in the Philippines (and anywhere in the world).
Telling Truer Stories of Safe and Legal Abortion
An Anthology and Contest for Artists and Creatives
Details
When: Aug 20, 2018 to Sept 28, 2018 (campaign duration). Accepted entries and winners will be announced and displayed during the Oct. 3 event hosted by Pinsan as part of the International Safe Abortion Day Campaign.
Where: TBD
What: Telling Truer Stories is an anthology and contest where artists of various media create artwork to tell various truths about abortion in the Philippines.
Purpose: The campaign aims to fill the lack of artwork that depicts abortion in a truer way – that does not adhere to the clichés and stereotypes that have been the default of mainstream media, perpetuating the stigma, myths, and misconceptions about abortion.
The entries will be curated by both expert artists and storytellers who have participated in a forum for creatives about the issue, as well as the advocates and activists they had conversations with.
Anyone can submit entries that will be curated for inclusion in the anthology and displayed at the Sept. 28 event. Optionally, submissions can be entered into the art contest for a chance to win prizes. The entries will be curated by the judges. The contest winners will be decided based on the score given by the panel of judges (80 percent) and online votes (20 percent).
